The Gratitude Challenge

By Darcy Fluitt

When my son, Daniel, was in elementary school, our Ford Aerostar minivan often served as a taxi, delivering his friends home after soccer practice or a school event. I would drive up to each house, the door would slide open and a kid would hop out. Sometimes, the child would pause, look at me and say two very important words: “THANK YOU!” I would always say, “You’re welcome,” while thinking, “What a nice boy. This is a boy that would make a good friend for Daniel.” Saying “THANK YOU” has so much power. The giver feels gratitude and the recipient feels appreciated. Both are smiling! It’s a win, win!

As you might have suspected from my introduction, this month elementary kids are talking about Gratitude-letting others know you see how they’ve helped you.

Shawna and I thought it would be fun to have a Gratitude Challenge. Let’s look for every opportunity to shout out, “THANK YOU!” Parents, you start! We know you are probably thanking your kids already. Make it a game. See how many times your family can thank one another in an afternoon, evening, or entire day.

As the month progresses, we are going to up the challenge and ask kids to write thank you notes to our firemen and teachers. Expect a delivery at your door of notecards and stickers that kids can use.

We hope that as you and your family practice the act of gratitude this month, you will grow in appreciation of one another. We also hope when you gather at your evening meal that you will take a moment to thank God for his goodness and faithfulness.

Memory Verse: Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good. His faithful love continues forever. Psalm 136:1(NIrV)
